Experts warn that certain popular supplements, especially in high doses, can cause serious digestive issues and other health problems. They particularly emphasize three common mistakes that are important to avoid.
High doses of antioxidants
Antioxidants are beneficial in moderate amounts, but excessive intake disrupts the balance between free radicals and antioxidants in the body.
"Be cautious with high doses of antioxidants, as supplements containing beta-carotene and vitamin E can disrupt the balance of gut bacteria," says Dr. Kevin Huffman for SheFinds.
He warns that high doses of beta-carotene increase the risk of lung cancer in smokers, while a high intake of vitamin E is associated with an increased risk of bleeding.
Too much iron
Excessive intake of iron can cause constipation, nausea, and stomach pain, and in the long term, it can damage the liver. Although iron is essential for health, large amounts pose serious risks.
Physician Dr. Peter Brukner points out: "Too much iron can lead to a condition called iron overload. This damages the liver and other organs, and also disrupts the balance of gut bacteria, causing inflammation and digestive issues."
Too much zinc
Zinc is important for immunity, but in excessive doses, it can be toxic. An excess of this mineral irritates the stomach lining and causes digestive problems.
Physician Dr. Michael O. McKinney explains: "An excess of zinc irritates the intestinal mucosa and disrupts the balance of bacteria in the stomach, leading to digestive discomfort."
